01

The first things to know

Learn what the cards do and how one turn moves from start to finish.

01

Lands make mana

Play one land from your hand each turn. Tap it to make mana, then spend that mana to cast spells.

Plains make white, Islands blue, Swamps black, Mountains red, and Forests green.
02

Read the card type

The type line tells you whether a card is a creature, instant, sorcery, artifact, enchantment, or land.

Most permanents stay on the battlefield. Instants and sorceries resolve, then go to the graveyard.
03

Follow the turn

Untap, upkeep, draw, first main phase, combat, second main phase, then end step.

You may play a land in either main phase, but still only one per turn.
04

Attack and block

Choose which creatures attack. Your opponent chooses which untapped creatures block, if any.

Damage is dealt together unless a card says otherwise. Creatures that take lethal damage are destroyed.
